3D Printed Home Decor: How It's Made, How Long It Lasts, and How to Care for It

3D printed planters, vases and desk pieces have gone from novelty to genuinely lovely objects — but if you're about to buy one, you probably have questions. How is it actually made? Will it last, or fade and warp in a year? Can it hold water? Here are straight answers from a studio that prints these things every day in Melbourne.

How FDM printing works, in plain words

Almost all printed decor is made with FDM (fused deposition modelling). A spool of plastic filament feeds into a heated nozzle, which melts it and draws the object one thin layer at a time — each layer around 0.2 mm tall, fused onto the one below. A medium planter is built from over a thousand of these layers and takes several hours on the printer. It's closer to slow-made ceramics than to injection-moulded mass production: one machine, one object, made start to finish for one order.

Layer lines: a feature, not a flaw

Run a finger over a printed piece and you'll feel fine horizontal ridges — the layers themselves. New buyers sometimes mistake these for a defect. They're not; they're the signature of the process, the way throwing rings are the signature of wheel-thrown pottery. Good designers lean into it: spiral vases, fluted planters and ribbed textures all use the layer structure deliberately, and the ridges catch light in a way smooth moulded plastic never does.

What is PLA, exactly?

Most decorative prints — including ours — are PLA (polylactic acid), a bioplastic fermented from plant starch, typically corn or sugarcane. Compared with ABS and other petroleum-derived plastics, PLA takes noticeably less energy to produce and gives off far less odour and emissions during printing. It's rigid, holds crisp detail, and comes in a huge colour range — we keep 15 colours on hand, from matte neutrals to bold brights, so a planter can be made to match your shelf rather than the other way round.

Honest talk: how long does it last?

Indoors, in normal conditions, PLA decor lasts for years — a decade is realistic for a planter that sits on a bookshelf. Its two genuine weaknesses are heat and prolonged harsh UV. Concretely, avoid:

  • Dishwashers. The wash cycle runs hot enough to soften and warp PLA. Always hand-wash.
  • Boiling water. Fine with room-temperature or warm tap water; never pour boiling water in.
  • Parked cars. An Australian car cabin in summer can pass 60°C — enough to slump PLA. Don't leave pieces on the dash or parcel shelf.
  • Harsh, all-day direct sun. A bright room is fine; months of intense direct sun on a windowsill will slowly fade colours and can eventually make the plastic brittle.

For wet areas, outdoor use or anything that cops real heat, PETG is the better material — it's what we use for our under-desk mounts, and it's available for commissions through our custom 3D printing service alongside PLA and carbon-fibre blends.

Caring for 3D printed pieces

  • Wipe with a damp cloth; add a drop of mild dish detergent for grime.
  • Dust textured surfaces with a soft brush — an old paintbrush is perfect for fluted designs.
  • Skip abrasive scourers and solvents (acetone and eucalyptus oil both attack plastics).
  • If a piece ever picks up a scuff, a light buff with the damp cloth usually lifts it.

Water and planters: what you need to know

Drained vs sealed

Planters come in two philosophies. Drained pots have drainage holes and pair with a drip tray — best for plants that hate wet feet, which is most of them. Sealed pots hold water like a cachepot; the smart move is to keep your plant in its plastic nursery pot and sit that inside, so you can lift it out to water and drain.

PLA itself is unbothered by room-temperature water — it won't dissolve or leach with normal watering. The thing to watch in cheaply printed pots is thin walls and poor layer bonding, which can slowly weep moisture through the seams. Well-printed pieces with proper wall thickness hold up fine, and using a drip tray protects your furniture regardless of what the pot is made of.
