Mounting your Mac under the desk gets it out of sight, tames the cables and frees the worktop for the things you actually touch. Here's what's worth knowing before you buy a mount, from ventilation to the Magnus Pro's steel-desk quirks.
Why mount your Mac under the desk at all?
- Desk space. Even a Mac Mini plus its cable tail claims a surprising footprint. Under-desk mounting hands that space back to your monitor, keyboard and coffee.
- Cable management. Power and peripherals can route straight into the Magnus Pro's cable tray, so nothing dangles. On a sit-stand desk this matters twice over: when the whole computer rides up and down with the desktop, cables never snag or stretch.
- Airflow and protection. Off the desk, your Mac collects less dust, dodges coffee spills and avoids knocks — and a well-designed mount can actually improve airflow compared with a Mac shoved against a monitor stand.
What to look for in an under-desk mount
Ventilation is non-negotiable
The Mac Studio draws cool air in through its base and exhausts out the rear; the Mac Mini M4 breathes through the bottom. A sealed, box-style sleeve traps warm air exactly where the computer needs it coolest, and thermal throttling follows. Look for an open, ventilated cage design with clear airflow paths rather than a snug solid enclosure.
A retaining lip, not just friction
Sit-stand desks move, and every height change is a small jolt. A mount that relies purely on friction can loosen its grip over months. A proper design has a positive retaining lip or full cage geometry that physically holds the computer even if the fit relaxes over time.
Material: why PETG beats PLA under a desk
PLA is a lovely material for decor, but it starts softening around 55–60°C. Under a desk, next to a warm exhaust vent, through an Australian summer — that's cutting it fine. PETG stays rigid to roughly 75–80°C, absorbs impacts better and flexes rather than cracks. Every under-desk mount we make is printed in PETG for exactly this reason. If a listing doesn't state the material, ask.
Hardware and screwdriver access
Check the mount ships with suitable fasteners and that you can actually reach them once it's in position. Our horizontal ventilated Mac Studio cage includes dedicated screwdriver access channels, because fumbling blind under a desktop gets old fast.
The Magnus Pro quirk: it's steel, not timber
Most under-desk mounts assume a timber or MDF top you can drive wood screws into. The Magnus Pro is different — it's a steel desk with a full metal understructure. Wood screws won't bite, and freehand drilling into a premium steel desk is not a job most owners want to attempt. Why 3D printed beats a generic metal bracket
Universal metal brackets hedge their bets: adjustable arms, rubber straps, foam padding. They can clamp pressure onto the case, block vents and still let the computer shift. A 3D printed mount is modelled to the exact millimetre dimensions of one specific device — vents line up with vents, the retaining lip lands where the chassis is strongest, and nothing squeezes the aluminium. When Apple changes a dimension, the design gets revised; a warehouse full of stamped steel can't do that.

A well-designed PETG mount for a Mac Studio or Mac Mini typically runs $35–$80 in Australia.
